Dr. K. R. V. “Raja” Subramanian has to his credit a unique blend of academic and corporate experience where he has led from the front for over 35 years. He started his academic career at Birla Institute of Technology & Science, Pilani, India (BITS, Pilani) – a highly respected university that has pioneered many educational innovations. He served at BITS, Pilani as a Professor of Computer Science. During the period 1989-1999, he was the Dean of the Distance Learning Programs Division (now called Work-Integrated Learning Programs). The division offered work-integrated learning programmes for employed professionals. During his tenure, the enrolment as well as the number of programmes offered increased significantly. He conceptualised and initiated the BITS Virtual University – a first of its kind in India at that time.
He left BITS, Pilani in 2000 to pursue a career in the IT industry. He served as the CEO of Ascendum Systems in Bangalore, India during 2000-2008. Even during this period, his love for teaching and the world of education never diminished. Indeed, a significant amount of business at Ascendum Systems came from learning services for customers such as IBM, Thomson Learning, etc. He also continued his association with BITS, Pilani and participated in the work-integrated learning programmes as an Adjunct Faculty.
In 2008, he founded Radix Learning, a Bangalore-based company that specialises in designing computer-based, task-centric assessment of competencies in specific domains. He continues in Radix Learning as Chairman. Radix Learning was incubated at the International Institute of Information Technology, Bangalore (IIIT-B). During this period, Dr. Subramanian continued his interest in academics by participating in the extension of educational activities of IIIT-B as an Adjunct Professor. In 2015, IIITB was chosen by the Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India to help build Myanmar Institute of Information Technology at Mandalay, Myanmar.
In 2015, Dr. Subramanian became the first Director of Myanmar Institute of Information Technology, Mandalay. His goal is to help MIIT become a university of high repute within a short period of 5 years (a feat that IIIT-B accomplished in its first 5 years). In this role, he works closely with the Ministry of Education, Government of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar, the faculty of MIIT from India, the faculty of MIIT from Myanmar, and the IT industries in India and in Myanmar, spearheading the growth of MIIT.
Teaching being is first love, he teaches the young students of MIIT, as well as the faculty as part of faculty development and capacity building at MIIT, Myanmar. His interests on the technical side include diverse areas, such as software engineering, object technology, software architecture, instructional design, and eLearning.
Dr. Subramanian has also served as Director and Secretary in the prestigious International Board of Standards for Training, Performance & Instruction (www.ibstpi.org). He holds a Master’s Degree in Economics, a Master’s Degree in Computer Science, and a Ph.D. in Computer Science.
