MIIT stands for Myanmar Institute of Information Technology. In 2012, the Government of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar and the Government of the Republic of India signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to create MIIT in Mandalay, with financial, technical, and operational assistance from India.  

The main objective is to design, develop, and operate MIIT along the lines of the successful model of International Institute of Information Technology, Bangalore, India. MIIT was created as a National Centre of Excellence in 2015 by the former Ministry of Science & Technology, Government of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar. Now, MIIT functions under the Ministry of Education, Government of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar.

MIIT is an institution of the Government of Myanmar. The Government of India provides assistance for the development and operation of MIIT. The International Institute of Information Technology, Bangalore (IIIT-B) acts as the mentor institution for MIIT and helps execute the academic functions of MIIT.
